The Tall Cylindrical Floor Vase is a piece of genuine architectural scale — at 65cm tall and 18cm in diameter, it commands a room with quiet authority. Designed to stand on the floor rather than on a surface, it brings the visual interest of ceramic art to a scale and location that tabletop pieces cannot reach, anchoring a corner, flanking a doorway, or standing beside a fireplace with the confidence of a sculpture.
The form is deceptively simple — a true cylinder from base to rim — but the surface is anything but plain. The exterior is textured with a series of shallow, irregular horizontal channels made by dragging a comb tool across the clay surface while the pot is slowly rotating, creating a pattern that is simultaneously geometric and organic, ordered and individual. In the right light, these channels create a play of highlight and shadow that makes the surface seem alive and in motion.
The glaze is a warm, sandy white — the colour of unbleached linen or beach sand — applied in a single generous coat that settles into the channels and recesses while remaining thinner on the raised ridges, creating natural tonal variation that emphasises the surface texture. The interior of the vase is glazed in the same glaze, making it genuinely watertight for tall stems in water.
Coil-built and hand-finished, this vase is made in small batches and takes considerable time to produce — the size and the hand-building technique make it a substantial investment of the maker’s skill and time. It is an investment well worth making for anyone who wants a truly significant piece of ceramic art in their home.
