The Ribbed Ceramic Tumbler is a versatile vessel that defies easy categorisation — it is simultaneously a water glass, a wine cup, a juice glass, a handleless coffee cup, and a pencil holder. Its simple cylindrical form, textured with evenly spaced throwing ribs that run from just above the foot ring to just below the rim, makes it pleasing to hold, easy to grip when wet, and genuinely beautiful in the light, where the ribs create alternating bands of highlight and shadow that make the glaze appear to shift in depth and colour.
The tumbler is wheel-thrown and the ribs are formed during the throwing process by pressing a comb or serrated rib tool against the clay while the wheel is turning — a traditional technique that requires precise timing and pressure to achieve an even, consistent result. The ribs on each tumbler are therefore slightly individual — exactly regular in spacing but subtly different in depth and sharpness from piece to piece.
With a capacity of 350ml, the tumbler is sized generously for water, wine, or a morning coffee. Its height of approximately 11cm and diameter of approximately 8cm give it a satisfying proportion — not too squat, not too tall, comfortable to hold in one hand. The rim is rolled slightly outward to prevent chipping and make drinking more comfortable.
The glaze is a warm, slightly translucent white with a matte finish that has a soft, chalky quality the light plays over beautifully. It is food-safe, dishwasher-safe, and microwave-safe. The tumbler is available in sets of two or four for those who wish to have a matching set, and looks wonderful displayed on open shelving when not in use.
