The Raw Bottom Espresso Cup is a celebration of material honesty. While the interior and exterior of the cup are finished in a smooth, food-safe glaze in a deep, warm stone colour, the bottom of the cup is left entirely unglazed — raw, fired clay that shows the true character of the stoneware body used to make it. This design decision is not an oversight; it is an aesthetic and philosophical choice, a reminder that the beautiful object you are holding began as a lump of earth, and that the skill of the maker is what transformed that earth into something of beauty and function.
The cup holds 80ml — the correct volume for a double espresso or a single ristretto — and has a slightly flared rim that encourages the proper way of drinking espresso: in one or two short sips that allow the full complexity of a properly extracted shot to register on the palate before it cools. The walls are slightly thicker than those of a conventional espresso cup, which helps to retain the temperature of the espresso for the brief time it takes to drink it.
The handle is small but well-formed — large enough for a comfortable two-finger grip but not so large that it overwhelms the delicacy of the small cup. The foot ring is precisely trimmed and shows the knife marks of hand finishing. The overall impression is of a piece that has been made with complete attention to function and material character, without any decorative excess.
The cup is sold individually, though it pairs naturally with the other pieces in the raw-bottom collection. It is dishwasher-safe and microwave-safe, though for espresso neither is typically relevant. An ideal gift for the serious coffee lover in your life.
