The Sculptural Incense Burner is a functional object elevated to the status of sculpture. While its purpose is straightforward — it holds incense sticks and cones while they burn, catching the ash safely — its form goes far beyond the merely utilitarian. The piece consists of two elements: a low, wide base dish that catches ash and provides a stable platform, and an upright element of abstract form that holds the incense stick at the correct angle for even, slow burning. Together, these two elements create a composition that is quietly beautiful in its proportions and relationships.
The upright element is the more interesting of the two forms — an irregular, slightly organic column that rises from the dish at a slight angle, its surface textured with shallow, irregular striations made by pulling a fork-like tool through the soft clay. At the top, a small hole accepts the incense stick and holds it securely at approximately 45 degrees, the angle that allows the smoke to rise freely without being deflected back onto the incense.
The glaze is a warm, slightly rough-textured matte in a deep warm grey — a colour and texture that reads as stone or aged metal and gives the piece an air of age and permanence that is appropriate for an object used in meditation and ritual contexts. The base dish is smooth and easy to clean; the upright element has some surface texture that ash does not adhere to and is easily brushed clean.
The burner is compatible with standard incense sticks and cone incense. It is made from heat-resistant stoneware clay and the glaze is lead-free and food-safe, though of course this piece is not intended for food use. It makes a thoughtful and beautiful gift for anyone who practices meditation, yoga, or simply enjoys the ritual of incense.
