The Textured Terracotta Planter brings the timeless warmth of unglazed terracotta to the indoor plant world, with a surface texture that elevates it well above the utilitarian plant pot. The exterior is decorated with a repeating impressed pattern — geometric lozenges arranged in staggered rows — made by pressing a carved wooden stamp into the soft clay before firing. The fired terracotta takes on a slightly variable tone as the clay fires — areas of thicker clay fire slightly darker, creating a subtle tonal map of the pot’s surface that makes the texture even more visually interesting.
Unglazed on the exterior and interior, this planter allows the terracotta to breathe — water evaporates through the porous walls, keeping the soil cooler and preventing the waterlogging that glazed pots can cause. This breathability is one of the reasons terracotta has been used for plant pots for thousands of years: it creates ideal conditions for most root systems, particularly those of Mediterranean herbs and succulent-type plants that prefer their roots to dry out between waterings.
The planter has a 25cm diameter and a 22cm depth — large enough for a substantial specimen plant, a herb garden, or a small shrub. The drainage hole in the base is generously sized to prevent waterlogging, and the foot of the pot is raised slightly on a small ring to allow drainage to flow freely.
Because terracotta is unglazed, this planter is not dishwasher-safe and should be cleaned with a brush and water. It can be used outdoors in frost-free conditions; in areas with winter frost, it should be brought indoors during the coldest months to prevent the water in the clay body from freezing and causing the pot to crack.
