Hand-Carved Garlic Keeper

The Hand-Carved Garlic Keeper is a perfect example of form following function with beauty as an outcome rather than an add-on. Garlic requires ventilation to keep fresh — sealed in a bag or jar, it sweats and softens; stored in the light, it sprouts; but stored in a ventilated ceramic vessel, it stays firm and flavourful for weeks. This keeper is designed around that functional requirement: its walls are pierced with a pattern of small carved holes that allow air to circulate freely while keeping the garlic in darkness, away from light that would trigger sprouting.

The holes are carved by hand into leather-hard clay using a small cylindrical punch and a pointed tool, creating a pattern that is simultaneously geometric and slightly irregular — the natural variation of hand work rather than the perfect repeatability of machine production. The pattern is a simple grid of circles arranged in staggered rows, but within this simple structure there is enough variation in the size and spacing of individual holes to give the piece a handmade warmth and individuality.

The keeper is made from terracotta — the traditional material for this purpose, and for good reason. Terracotta is porous and naturally breathable, which means it helps regulate the humidity around the stored garlic, keeping it neither too wet nor too dry. The piece is unglazed both inside and out, allowing maximum breathability. It holds a full head of garlic or two to three loose bulbs.

A fitted terracotta lid with a knob handle rests on the rim of the body and is easily lifted for access. The lid also has a small hole at the top — both decorative and additional ventilation.
