The Abstract Silhouette Bud Vase is a sculpture that also holds flowers — or, rather, a vessel whose form is so complete and interesting in itself that the absence of flowers is not a lack but an alternative mode of display. The silhouette is abstract and slightly anthropomorphic — a tall, narrow form with a slightly curved waist and an asymmetric, flared opening that suggests a figure in movement, a gesture of offering, or a bird in flight, depending on the angle and the imagination of the viewer.
Hand-built from a fine, dark stoneware clay, the vase is finished with a semi-matte glaze in deep charcoal that emphasises the sculptural quality of the form. Where the glaze is thin at the raised edges and corners, the darker clay body shows through, creating a natural, unforced darkening that gives the piece depth and complexity. The interior is glazed to the waterline — approximately 15cm from the base — ensuring that the vase is genuinely watertight and functional.
At approximately 25cm tall, the vase is sized for a single stem or a small cluster of stems — a garden rose, a few stems of eucalyptus, a single dahlia, a handful of dried grass. It does not require an elaborate arrangement: the vase’s own form provides so much visual interest that a single, well-chosen stem is all the decoration needed.
The vase is stable and well-weighted, with a base diameter that ensures it will not tip when holding stems. It is not dishwasher-safe — hand washing is recommended — and should not be immersed completely in water, as the exterior of the base is unglazed and would absorb moisture. Displayed on a shelf, sideboard, or dining table, it is an object of genuine artistic interest.
