The Honeycomb Pattern Salt & Pepper Shakers are a pair of small ceramic objects that bring a disproportionate amount of pleasure to the dining table. Decorated with a precise, raised honeycomb pattern that covers the full surface of each shaker, they are simultaneously a celebration of geometry, a nod to the natural world, and a genuinely practical pair of condiment dispensers that earn their place on the table every day.
The honeycomb pattern is applied to the leather-hard clay using a sprig mould — a small plaster mould that creates the individual hexagonal cells in low relief, which are then attached to the surface of the shaker body in a pattern that wraps around the full circumference. The result is a surface texture that is pleasant to hold — the hexagonal cells provide grip and tactile interest — and visually interesting at every scale, from across the table to close examination.
Each shaker has a slightly different number of holes in the top to allow salt and pepper to be dispensed at appropriate rates: the salt shaker has five holes arranged in a cross, providing a generous flow for those who like to season confidently; the pepper shaker has three smaller holes arranged in a triangle, providing a more restrained flow appropriate for the stronger flavour of ground pepper. The shakers are identified by an ‘S’ and ‘P’ subtly incised into the base.
The shakers are made from fine, white stoneware and glazed in a warm, slightly translucent white that allows the texture of the honeycomb pattern to register clearly through the glaze. They hold a generous volume of salt and pepper and are easy to fill through the base, which has a large, threaded cork stopper for filling and a rubber gasket to prevent leakage. Both shakers are dishwasher-safe and make an excellent gift, presented together in a small gift box.
