The Wavy Edge Fruit Basket redefines what a fruit bowl can be. While conventional fruit bowls are designed primarily as containers, this piece is designed as a centrepiece — an object of genuine visual interest that happens to hold fruit beautifully. The wavy rim — a series of eight broad, flowing waves that rise and fall around the circumference of the bowl — gives the piece a dynamic, almost organic quality that makes it look like a natural form rather than a manufactured object. Every angle offers a different view; the waves overlap and relate to each other differently depending on where you stand.
The bowl is hand-built from a white stoneware clay using a technique that involves draping a thin slab of clay over a mould and then manipulating the rim while the clay is still soft enough to hold the wave form without cracking. The process requires careful timing and a sensitive hand — too soft and the waves collapse; too dry and the clay cracks when manipulated. The result, when it works well, is a rim of great fluidity and life.
The interior of the bowl is glazed in a clear, glossy glaze that enhances the whiteness of the porcelain and makes it easy to clean. The exterior has a raw, unglazed finish that shows the warm, slightly rough character of the stoneware body and provides natural grip when carrying the bowl. The base is flat and stable, and the bowl is wide enough — 35cm across — and shallow enough — 12cm deep — to display a generous selection of seasonal fruit attractively without the top layer being out of reach.
Dishwasher-safe (though the aesthetic of the raw exterior is best preserved by hand washing), this bowl is equally useful as a fruit bowl, a salad serving bowl, a bread basket, or a display vessel for dried botanicals and decorative objects.
