The Organic Shaped Serving Platter is the hero piece of any table — the large, generous, slightly irregular form that holds the cheese board, the antipasto spread, the roasted vegetables, or the sliced roast that everyone gathers around. Its deliberately organic shape — not quite oval, not quite rectangular, with a rim that rises and falls in a natural, unforced way — gives it character and life that a perfectly symmetrical platter could never possess.
Hand-built rather than wheel-thrown, this platter is formed by pressing slabs of stoneware clay over a mould and then refining the shape and surface by hand. The process gives the platter a slight movement and personality in its form — the long dimension is approximately 40cm, the short dimension approximately 25cm, but these measurements vary by a centimetre or two from piece to piece as the clay responds differently to each maker’s hands. The surface shows the gentle compression marks of hand finishing, adding a tactile quality to what is already a visually interesting object.
The glaze is a warm, creamy white with subtle brown flecks where the clay body shows through at thinner glaze areas — a natural effect called “breaking” that is prized in stoneware. The rim is left slightly thicker than the body, giving the platter a sense of weight and solidity without making it unnecessarily heavy to carry.
The platter is large enough to serve as a genuine sharing piece for four to six people and is an essential item for anyone who enjoys relaxed, sociable entertaining. It is oven-safe, dishwasher-safe, and robust enough for daily use. It also makes a beautiful display piece when not in use — propped against a kitchen wall or displayed on a shelf, it is an object of genuine beauty.
